Got the keys to a new townhouse on the old paper-mill bend, or a side-return reno on a bungalow a street back, and a pile of offcuts and old fittings that needs to be gone by the weekend? Hiring a skip is the easy part. Binswest has run bin hire across the inner north since 2010, and an Alphington job almost always starts with the same practical question: where the bin can actually stand. Book by 9am and a same-day drop is often on the table.
Two kinds of block send most of the bookings we take here, and they fill a skip very differently. Down on the riverbend, where the redeveloped mill site has become townhouses and apartments, the work is new-build packaging, plasterboard offcuts and fresh fit-out waste on infill lots with barely a metre to spare beside the build. A street back, through the Federation and Californian-bungalow pockets, it is a kitchen strip-out, a bathroom, or a back-half extension throwing off heavy mixed rubble. Tell us which one you are working and we size to it the first time.
Tight Infill Lot or a Bungalow Block? Where Your Skip Can Sit
On a new townhouse or apartment site near the river, off-street room is the scarce thing. The build often fills the lot, so the skip lands on the road or the nature strip, and that is the moment a council placement permit comes into it. On the older bungalow streets you usually have a driveway or a front setback, so the bin sits on your own property while you fill it and no permit is needed at all.
This is why we ask about your street before we talk size. A walk-in skip with a wheelbarrow door is the easy load-up when there is driveway room and a flat run to the bin. Where the only spot is a tight kerbside gap between parked cars and a new crossover, a smaller lift-on Marrel craned neatly into place is the safer call. Send us the address and a photo if you are unsure, and we will tell you what fits before you commit to anything.
About Binswest
Binswest is a locally owned skip bin business that Mark started in 2010, run out of our own Government-Approved Waste Transfer Station in Sunshine North. Over those years we have served more than 6,000 clients across Melbourne’s west, north, inner suburbs and the CBD, which is a lot of driveways, kerbsides and council quirks read in person. The yard is the reason the pricing on this page is flat and the recovery rate is real: in 2024 we recycled 41% of what came through, repurposed another 35%, and sent just 24% to landfill. When your Alphington load is picked up, it goes back to that yard to be sorted rather than tipped straight into a hole.
Alphington Skip Prices, Set Out in Plain Numbers
Most operators make you fill in a form before they will tell you a number. We would rather you saw it here. These are starting prices, and they include the run from our Sunshine North yard, so there is no surprise distance fee at the gate:
-
from $250
-
from $350
-
from $450
-
from $550
-
from $650
-
priced on quote
Your final figure depends on the size you choose, the waste type and the hire length. A standard hire runs around 7 days, with extensions available if a renovation drags on. Ask when you book and we will confirm the all-in price for your job, with no hidden fees.
Which Skip Size Suits Your Alphington Job
Sizing is where most of the cost is won or lost, so it helps to match the bin to the actual job rather than guessing big.
- A 2m3 or 3m3 mini suits a single-room clear-out, a small bathroom strip, or the boxes and packaging left after moving into a new townhouse.
- A 4m3 Marrel, with its wheelbarrow door and ramp, is the workhorse for a kitchen refit or a single-room renovation with heavier waste.
- A 6m3 handles a larger renovation or a solid garden overhaul off one of the deeper bungalow blocks.
- An 8m3 takes a full back-half extension strip-out or a whole-house declutter.
- For a bigger build or an ongoing fit-out rotation, sizes of 10m3 and up are priced on quote. Tell us the job and we will recommend the body that fits the load and the lot.
Heavy loads like soil, brick, concrete and tile rubble have weight limits, so a smaller bin filled with dense material is often the right answer rather than a large one you cannot legally lift. We will flag that when you describe what is coming out.

Same-Day and Next-Day Delivery to Alphington
Alphington sits on the daily inner-north round we drive from Sunshine North, the same Darebin run that carries our bin hire in Bundoora further up the line, so getting a bin here is quick. Book by 9am and a same-day drop is often available, subject to how full the run already is that morning. Anything booked later goes out next day. We run a standard Monday drop-off and Thursday pickup for a full week of hire, and we can shift those days to suit a build schedule or a single weekend push. You get an instant confirmation with the delivery date once it is locked in.

What You Can and Can’t Put in the Bin
Our skips take general household waste, renovation and construction debris, timber, green waste, soil and most hard rubbish from a clean-out. Mixing general and building waste in one bin is fine for most jobs.
Some materials are prohibited by regulation and cannot go in any skip: asbestos, gas bottles, tyres, batteries, wet paint and flammable liquids. These need specialist disposal, and putting them in a skip risks the whole load. If you have a specific item you are unsure about, ask us when you book and we will tell you how to handle it. For the full list of what is and isn’t accepted, see our guide on what you can put in our bins.
- Wet Paints
Liquid paints or leftover tins
- Flammable Liquid
Petrol, thinners, solvents, oils
- Asbestos
Any bonded or loose asbestos
- Gas Bottles
BBQ cylinders, LPG tanks
- Tyres. Batteries*
Car tires, lithium's or lead-acid batteries

Do You Need a Darebin Permit?
The rule is simple and it turns entirely on where the skip stands. Keep the bin on your own driveway or property and you need no permit. The moment it sits on the road, the nature strip or the footpath, a council placement permit applies.
Most of Alphington sits in the City of Darebin, so that is the council for the bulk of these streets. The southern edge runs down to the river, and along that strip the boundary crosses into the City of Yarra, the same council that covers our bin hire in Abbotsford just downstream, so an address near the water can fall under either council. This genuinely matters on the riverside infill lots, where kerbside placement is the norm rather than the exception. Tell us your street and we will confirm which council holds it and sort the permit as part of the booking, so the right approval is in place before the truck arrives. We will confirm the council’s current placement-permit rate with you at booking.
Suburbs We Service Around Alphington
Alphington is part of our daily City of Darebin round, and we cover the neighbouring suburbs on the same run. If your job sits over one of the borders, we also offer bin hire in Fairfield, cover Northcote, and serve Thornbury, all within the same council and the same rotation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Most of Alphington is in the City of Darebin, which covers the bulk of the residential streets. The southern riverside edge crosses into the City of Yarra. If your address is near the river and you need a kerbside placement, give us the street and we will confirm the council and sort the permit for you.
Yes. If the bin stays on your own driveway or property, no council permit is required. That is common on the older bungalow blocks with a setback. On a tight new townhouse lot there is often no off-street room, so a permit for kerbside placement comes into it, and we organise that.
A 4m3 Marrel with a wheelbarrow door is the usual pick for a single-room refit, since it takes heavier rubble and is easy to load by barrow. A larger extension or a whole-of-house job is better on a 6m3 or 8m3. Describe the work and we will match the bin.
Yes. A general waste skip handles mixed renovation and construction debris, including timber, plasterboard and packaging, in the one bin. Keep the prohibited items out and the rest can go in together.
A standard hire is around 7 days, which suits most renovation and fit-out stages. If the build runs long, we can extend it. On a tight lot where the skip is on the kerb under a permit, we will help you plan the drop and pickup so it is on site only as long as you need it.
