Pulling a tired kitchen out of a single-fronted terrace, fitting out a warehouse-conversion office, or clearing a Bridge Road shopfront between tenants? Those are the three jobs that fill most skips in Richmond, here in Melbourne’s inner-east City of Yarra, and the one you have on your hands changes the answer before you have even picked a size. Binswest has run a daily inner-east round since 2010, so when you ring to hire a bin for a Richmond address you reach the people who actually deliver here. Tell us the street and what is coming out, and we will sort where the skip can sit, the right size, and a price you can plan around, all in the one call.

Skip bin hire and mini skip hire in Richmond both run off that same daily rotation, and the part most operators keep behind a quote form, the actual price per size, is set out in plain numbers further down this page.

Three Richmond Jobs, Three Different Skips

If you are renovating a terrace, the load is usually a single-room strip-out: old kitchen carcasses, bathroom tiles, plaster and lath off a hallway wall. That is a smaller, heavier mix than most people expect, and a 3m3 or 4m3 bin generally carries it.

If you are in a converted warehouse or an office floor around the Cremorne end, the waste is a fit-out clear-out: partition board, carpet tiles, old workstations, packaging. It is bulkier and lighter, and the question that matters most is where a truck can set the bin down on a tight one-way street.

And if you are stripping out a Bridge Road or Swan Street shop or cafe, the job runs on the clock. The fixtures and shop-fit have to be gone before the next lease starts, often around trading hours on a busy retail strip. Tell us which of these you are facing and we will match the bin to it, rather than handing you a size list and wishing you luck.

About Binswest

Binswest is a family-run Melbourne skip bin business, founded in 2010 by Mark and operating every week since. More than 6,000 clients have hired with us across the city’s western, northern, inner and CBD suburbs, which is how our drivers come to know the streets where a walk-in bin can take the kerb and the ones where it cannot.

What happens to your waste after pickup matters to us as much as getting it there. Every load comes back to our Government-Approved Waste Transfer Station in Sunshine North, where it is sorted by hand. In 2024 that recovered 41% of what we collected for recycling and another 35% for repurposing, leaving just 24% for landfill. When you book a Richmond skip, that is where your old kitchen and your shop-fit end up: sorted, not simply tipped.

Pricing for Bin Hire in Richmond

We publish a starting price for every standard size, so you can plan the job before you call:

  • from $250
  • from $350
  • from $450
  • from $550
  • from $650
  • priced on quote

Bins of 10m3 and up are quoted to the job rather than fixed, because the right price depends on the load and the access. The starting prices above hold for general, garden, building and commercial waste; a heavier load, mostly soil, brick or concrete, can shift the figure on weight, and we will tell you straight if it does. Standard hire runs three to seven days with extensions available, and there are no hidden gate fees on top of the quote you agree.

Where the Skip Sits on a Single-Fronted Street

Most homes in Richmond are Victorian and Edwardian terraces and workers’ cottages, single-fronted and hard up to the footpath, with frontages that often run only four to six metres wide and no off-street parking. On streets like these the bin rarely fits on private ground, so it goes on the kerb or the nature strip instead. That one fact decides the next two: whether a council permit applies, and whether a walk-in skip or a lift-on works for your access.

A walk-in skip needs room for the truck to position it and for you to wheel waste straight in through the door. Where the frontage is too tight for that, a lift-on bin craned into place is the smarter answer, and it can drop into a spot a walk-in never could. Tell us your street and roughly what you are clearing, and we will tell you which one suits before anything is booked.

Skip Bin Sizes for a Richmond Job

We run bins from 2m3 minis through to 31m3 Hooklifts, in Marrel, Hooklift and standard skip types. For the terrace and apartment work that dominates Richmond, the smaller end of the range does most of the lifting:

  • 2m3: a top-load mini, 1.8m long by 1.5m wide and 0.9m high. Suits a small clean-out or a single load of household junk.
  • 3m3: top-load, 2.4m by 1.5m by 0.97m. The usual pick for a kitchen or bathroom refit.
  • 4m3: 3.2m by 1.5m by 0.96m, with a wheelbarrow door and ramp for heavier mixed waste.
  • 6m3 and 8m3: walk-in bins for a larger renovation or a bulkier fit-out clear-out, where access lets a truck position them.

If you are running a major demolition or a full commercial strip-out, larger Hooklifts up to 31m3 are available and we will size and quote those against your job. Not sure which way to go? Describe the load and we will give you an honest recommendation, not the biggest bin on the list.

What You Can and Can’t Put in the Bin

Our bins take general household rubbish, old furniture and junk, green and garden waste, building materials such as bricks, tiles, concrete and plaster, and commercial waste like office clear-outs and packaging. For load-safety reasons the bin must not be overfilled above the rim.

A few things cannot go in, by regulation: asbestos, flammable liquids such as petrol, thinners and solvents, wet paint, gas bottles and LPG cylinders, tyres, and batteries. If your clear-out turns up something you are unsure about, ask us when you book and we will tell you how to handle it. Keeping these out is also what lets us recover so much of each load rather than sending it to landfill.

Skip Bin Waste Materials that are NOT Allowed
  • Wet Paints

    Liquid paints or leftover tins

  • Flammable Liquid

    Petrol, thinners, solvents, oils

  • Asbestos

    Any bonded or loose asbestos

  • Gas Bottles

    BBQ cylinders, LPG tanks

  • Tyres. Batteries*

Car tires, lithium's or lead-acid batteries

Do not overfill skip bins for OH&S reasons

Same-Day and Next-Day Delivery to Richmond

Book by 9am and a same-day drop to a Richmond address is often on the table, subject to how booked the day’s run already is; otherwise next-day is the norm. Our phones run Monday to Friday 7am to 4pm and Saturday 7am to 1pm, with online enquiries taken any day, Sundays included. A standard hire is a Monday drop-off and a Thursday pickup, though we will work the dates around a settlement, a handover or a trade deadline where we can. On a retail strip-out where the timing is tight, tell us the cut-off and we will build the delivery and pickup around it.

City of Yarra Permits: Kerb, Footpath or Nature Strip

Because so few Richmond properties have a driveway, the permit question comes up more here than in most suburbs. The rule is straightforward: a skip kept entirely on your own private driveway or hardstand needs no permit, while a skip placed on the road, the kerb, the footpath or the nature strip requires a placement permit from the City of Yarra. Much of Richmond also sits under heritage planning controls, which Yarra takes seriously, so on a period street it pays to get the placement right the first time.

You do not have to navigate that alone. When you book, we will flag whether your address is likely to need a permit and point you to the City of Yarra’s process. We will confirm the council’s current placement-permit fee with you at booking rather than guessing at a figure here, since rates change. The goal is simple: the bin lands where it is allowed to, and you are not caught out by a parking officer mid-renovation.

The City of Yarra Suburbs Next to Richmond

Richmond sits among a tight cluster of inner-east suburbs we cover on the same daily round, all within the City of Yarra. The 3121 postcode is shared with Cremorne and Burnley right next door, so a job a few streets over answers to the same council and the same permit process. We also run regularly to the workplace pocket served by our bin hire in Cremorne page, the terrace streets covered by bin hire in Burnley, the river-bend heritage and warehouse mix of bin hire in Abbotsford, and the leafy Darebin-edge streets of bin hire in Alphington. If your job straddles the boundary of two of these, mention it and we will sort the right council for your street.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a City of Yarra permit to put a skip on the street outside my Richmond terrace?

If the skip goes on the road, kerb, footpath or nature strip, yes, a City of Yarra placement permit applies. If it stays entirely on your own driveway or hardstand, it does not. Given how few Richmond terraces have off-street room, most kerbside jobs here do need one, and we will flag it and point you to the council’s process when you book.

Will a skip fit a single-fronted terrace with no driveway?

Often the bin cannot sit on the property at all, so it goes kerbside under a permit, and a smaller 2m3 or 3m3 mini is the easiest to place on a narrow frontage. Where a walk-in will not fit the access, a lift-on bin craned into position is usually the answer. Tell us the street and we will work out which suits.

Am I being quoted for Richmond in Victoria, not Richmond in New South Wales?

Yes. This page and our service cover Richmond in Victoria, in the City of Yarra, dispatched from our Sunshine North base. If your address is here in inner-east Melbourne, you are in the right place.

What size skip suits a commercial office or shop strip-out in Richmond?

A fit-out clear-out is bulkier than a home renovation, so a 6m3 or 8m3 walk-in often suits where access allows, and a larger Hooklift for a bigger demolition or strip-out. Because retail and office jobs run to a deadline, tell us your timing and we will size the bin and schedule the drop and pickup around it.

Book a Skip for Your Richmond Job

A Richmond booking is rarely just the kitchen: it is the terrace frontage, the shared 3121 permit question and the heritage street all read together before the truck leaves the yard, and on these streets that reading is the difference between a clean drop and a parking headache.

Call 0427 166 444 with your Richmond address and a rough idea of the job, or send an online enquiry any day, and we will size the bin, settle the permit question and quote a flat price.
