Which Skip Size Works When Access, Not Volume, Decides

Our range runs from 2m3 minis through to 31m3 hooklift bins, in Marrel (lift-on), hooklift and walk-in skip types. Out in the suburbs the load picks the size. In the grid the access usually picks it first, so the smaller lift-on bins do more of the work here than anywhere else we deliver.

2m3 and 3m3 minis suit an apartment declutter, a single office tidy, or a tight loading-bay spot where a longer body will not turn.
4m3 Marrel is the one most city refits land on, with their mix of tile, cabinetry and plasterboard. It lifts on and off without a ramp, so it fits most loading bays and footpath positions.

Booking Around a Trading-Hours or End-of-Lease Deadline

Two job shapes turn up here far more than any third, and they reach a quote differently because they land in different places. A commercial fit-out or strip-out is usually mixed, often heavy, and tied to a trading-hours or end-of-lease date, so the timing and the heavy-waste rate weigh as much as the size. An apartment clear-out in a residential tower tends to route through the building’s own loading bay on a manager-booked window, which keeps it off a council permit but ties it to the dock schedule. When you call, we work out which one you have, because that answer decides the bin, the rate, and whether a permit is even in play. If a handover date is driving the job, give us the deadline and we work the delivery and pickup back from it. Standard hire runs 7 days, with extensions available.

What You Can and Can’t Put in the Bin

Three streams cover most city jobs. General waste is the standard mixed load: shopfit timber, office strip-out material, packaging, cardboard, soft furnishings and light renovation debris. Heavy waste goes in a separate bin at a different rate with a lower fill line, and it shows up on refurbishments where an old concrete, tile or paved floor comes up. Green waste is limited in the grid but applies to the occasional rooftop or courtyard garden clear.

One point matters for older city stock in particular. Pre-1980s office partitions and some hospitality kitchen splashbacks can contain asbestos, and asbestos cannot go in any skip bin, from any operator. It needs a licensed removalist and a specialised disposal facility. Per waste disposal regulations, the materials never allowed in any bin are asbestos, flammable liquids, wet paints, gas bottles, tyres and batteries, and because we work to OH&S load-safety standards, bins must not be overfilled. Do You Need a City of Melbourne Permit?

It depends on where the bin sits, not on who delivers it. On a building’s own loading dock or basement bay, with the manager’s approval, no council permit applies, because that ground is private title. The moment a bin sits on a public road, footpath or laneway in the grid, you need a City of Melbourne waste bin permit, and that comes up far more often here than anywhere else we cover.

A city application also draws more scrutiny than a quiet suburban one. The placement has to clear the tram corridor, sit outside the clearway hours, and avoid any event-traffic overlay through the grid, so approval can take longer and the conditions are tighter. We do not lodge the application for you. On the booking call we tell you whether your address is likely to need one, give you a realistic read on the approval window, point you to the form, and time the delivery around it.
