Clearing a deceased estate, gutting a kitchen, or shifting a yard’s worth of dug-out clay and busted path off a Preston block? The job decides the skip, and what is going in matters as much as how much of it there is. Heavy waste like brick, soil and tile reaches the weight limit long before it looks full, and a Preston address can throw either kind of load at you, often on the same street. Binswest has run skip bins into Melbourne’s inner north since 2010, with more than 6,000 jobs behind us, so the first thing we sort with you is what you are actually getting rid of. Tell us that and your address, and bin hire in Preston becomes a quick, plain-priced conversation: a 2m3 mini starts from $250, household sizes are set out in writing further down, and a same-day drop is often there if you call before 9am.

What a Preston Load Tells Us Before We Quote

Got a single-room declutter, a full renovation strip-out, or a knock-down block to clear before the build starts? Preston is one of the larger, more mixed suburbs in the City of Darebin, and the loads here run the full range. The postwar brick veneers and bungalows around High Street, Gilbert Road and the Preston Market produce kitchen and bathroom refits, garden overhauls and full-house clear-outs. The redevelopment streets turning over to townhouses and apartments near the Bell and Regent stations produce demolition rubble, soil and mixed construction waste. Those two ends want different bins even at the same starting price, because dense material is costed by weight, not by how high it stacks. Tell us what is coming out and we size the bin to the heaviest part of it. We put skips on Preston driveways and kerbs for exactly these jobs most weeks.

About Binswest

Binswest is a family-owned skip bin business, founded in 2010 by Mark and based at our own yard in Sunshine North. Since then we have served more than 6,000 clients across Melbourne’s western, northern, CBD and inner suburbs, Preston among them on our daily Darebin run. The crew of seven-plus carries close to 100 years of combined experience, with accredited training across waste sorting, recycling and customer support, and the whole operation is fully insured. What that adds up to for a Preston booking is plain: a real person who knows the suburb answers the phone, the price you are quoted is the price on the invoice under our best-price guarantee, and the bin turns up when we said it would.

Pricing for Bin Hire in Preston

Most providers around here keep their numbers behind a quote form. We put ours on the page, because the price is the first thing you want to know:

  • from $250
  • from $350
  • from $450
  • from $550
  • from $650
  • priced on quote

Those are starting prices for general waste in our standard Darebin delivery zone, and they carry a best-price guarantee with no hidden fees. Heavy-waste loads and longer hires are worked out when you book, not slipped onto the invoice at pickup. The figure we give you on the phone is the figure you pay.

Bin Hire Preston

Same-Day and Next-Day Delivery to Preston

Booking before 9am usually puts a skip on your Preston address the same day, subject to how full the run already is. After that, the bin books for the next day. We run Monday to Friday 7am to 4pm and Saturday 7am to 1pm, with after-hours support Monday to Saturday and online enquiries answered on Sundays. Standard hire runs up to 7 days, and extensions are easy if a renovation or a build slips its dates, which they usually do. Two things on a Preston job are worth a few days’ notice: a kerbside drop that needs a council permit has to wait on Darebin approval, and a larger hooklift bin for a demolition clear needs a day to roster the truck.

Which Skip Size Fits Your Preston Job

Because Preston spans everything from a tidy bungalow refresh to a full demolition-and-rebuild, the size range it draws on is genuinely wide. As a guide:

  • 2m3 mini: a single-room declutter or a small strip-back where access is tight.
  • 3m3: a kitchen or bathroom refit on a typical Preston home.
  • 4m3: a bathroom-and-laundry combo or a heavy mixed load, with a wheelbarrow door that makes loading rubble and old plaster easier.
  • 6m3 walk-in: a full kitchen renovation or a solid garden overhaul on a larger postwar block.
  • 8m3 walk-in: a multi-room renovation or the strip-out stage of a bigger project.
  • 10m3 and larger: townhouse-site, demolition and commercial loads on Marrel and hooklift bins, priced on quote so the truck, the access and the weight are all costed against the real job.

Brick, concrete, soil and tile are the catch. They fill a bin by weight well before they fill it by volume, so a redevelopment clear and a furniture clear-out can need very different skips. We size to the dense part of your load.

Skip Bin Waste Materials Allowed
  • Green Waste

    Garden trimmings, branches, grass clippings

  • General Rubbish

    Household items, old furniture, junk

  • Building Materials

    Bricks, tiles, concrete, plaster

  • Commercial Waste

    Office waste, packaging, light materials

  • Industrial Waste

    Factory debris, non-hazardous by-products

What You Can and Can’t Put in the Bin

Preston’s older bungalow and brick-veneer stock is worth a word before the skip lands. Homes built before 1990 can carry asbestos in eaves, ceiling sheets and bathroom splashbacks, and asbestos goes in no skip bin from any operator. It needs a licensed removalist. Lath-and-plaster from a bungalow strip-out is fine in a general-waste bin, but it is dense, so it counts toward the weight fast. Original hardwood, brick and tile are high-recovery materials we sort for repurposing rather than send to landfill.

General household, renovation and garden waste, timber, cardboard and soft fittings are all fine. Bricks, concrete, soil and rubble go in a heavy-waste bin at a different rate and fill line. What never goes in any bin: asbestos, flammable liquids, wet paint, gas bottles, tyres and batteries, and bins must not be overfilled under load-safety rules. The full list and how we handle mixed loads sit on our guide to what is allowed in a skip bin.

Skip Bin Waste Materials that are NOT Allowed
  • Wet Paints

    Liquid paints or leftover tins

  • Flammable Liquid

    Petrol, thinners, solvents, oils

  • Asbestos

    Any bonded or loose asbestos

  • Gas Bottles

    BBQ cylinders, LPG tanks

  • Tyres. Batteries*

Car tires, lithium's or lead-acid batteries

Do not overfill skip bins for OH&S reasons

City of Darebin Permits for a Preston Placement

Preston sits wholly inside the City of Darebin, the same council covering Northcote, Thornbury and Kingsbury, so there is no boundary guesswork on which authority issues your permit. The rule turns entirely on where the skip stands:

  • On your own property, a driveway, off-street parking or behind the fence: no permit needed.
  • On a public road, nature strip or footpath: a City of Darebin placement permit is required.

This is where Preston’s mix shows. A bungalow or brick-veneer block with a driveway usually keeps the bin on private ground and the council out of it. A mid-build redevelopment block, where the old house is gone and the frontage is full of formwork, almost always pushes the skip to the kerb, and the same goes for the denser townhouse and apartment frontages near the stations. We tell you whether your street needs a permit when you book, and confirm the council’s current placement-permit fee with you then, rather than guessing at a figure now.

Where Your Preston Waste Ends Up

Every Preston skip we collect comes back to our own Government-Approved Waste Transfer Station in Sunshine North, where the load is sorted by hand instead of tipped straight to landfill. Owning that station is why the recovery numbers hold: across 2024 we recovered 41% of incoming material for recycling and another 35% for repurposing, leaving 24% to landfill. On Preston jobs that counts for more than it sounds, because the bungalow renovations and the demolition clears here send through a lot of recoverable hardwood, brick and tile that would otherwise be buried.

Suburbs We Service Around Preston

Preston is part of our daily inner-north run, and the City of Darebin pockets next door ride the same truck and the same pricing. For the council and placement detail specific to each:

Wider along the same daily run, the City of Yarra and Darebin corridor down the Merri Creek picks up bin hire in Fairfield and neighbouring bin hire in Alphington, while the truck reaches bin hire in Bundoora out on Darebin’s north-eastern edge.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size skip suits a Californian-bungalow renovation in Preston?

A single-room refresh usually lands on a 3m3, while a kitchen-and-bathroom job up to a larger refit moves to a 4m3 or 6m3. Bungalow strip-outs throw off dense lath-and-plaster, so we size to that weight rather than the apparent volume, and confirm it against your job on the call.

I'm clearing a redevelopment block in Preston. What do I need?

A demolition or townhouse-site clear generally wants a 10m3 or larger Marrel or hooklift bin, priced on quote because the weight and access drive the cost. With the old house gone there is rarely room on the block, so plan for a kerbside drop and a City of Darebin permit, which we organise as part of the booking.

Does a skip on my Preston driveway need a Darebin permit?

No. If the bin sits wholly on your own property, a driveway, off-street parking or behind the fence, no permit applies, which covers most of Preston’s bungalow and brick-veneer streets. A permit is only needed once the bin goes onto a public road, nature strip or footpath.

Can you handle a shop or commercial fit-out near the Preston Market?

Yes. Strip-out and fit-out waste around the market and the High Street shops tends to be mixed and heavy on tight handover deadlines, and it almost always needs a kerbside bin and a Darebin permit. We size the skip to the trade waste and time the drop and pickup around your trading hours.

How heavy can my Preston load be before it changes the bin?

Sooner than most people expect. Half a bin of broken concrete, brick or soil can outweigh a full bin of furniture, so a heavy-waste load may need a smaller-looking skip or a different rate. Tell us what is going in and we will match the size to the weight before you commit to anything.
