“The kitchen’s coming out next week and I’ve nowhere to put the old one.” That is how a lot of Ivanhoe bookings start, on a period home up on the ridge above the Yarra that has waited thirty years for its turn. Binswest has run skip bins into these streets since 2010, so the first thing we settle with you is not the size but where the bin can actually stand, because on Ivanhoe’s older, narrower frontages that answer decides whether a City of Banyule permit comes into it. Get that right and a single-room strip-out lands on a 4m3 from $450, booked by 9am for same-day delivery if the run still has room. This page covers skip bin hire and mini skip hire across Ivanhoe, in Melbourne’s north-east, with prices set out in writing further down.
What Size Skip a Period-Home Renovation Actually Needs
Start with the job in front of you, not a size chart. Pulling out one room, a bathroom or a kitchen? A 4m3 usually handles it, and its lower walls and wheelbarrow door make loading old plaster, tile and hardwood far easier than heaving it over a high side. Opening up a whole room with cabinetry, flooring and wall waste together tends to want a 6m3. Clearing a large old house for a multi-room refit, or emptying one after a downsizing move, runs to an 8m3.
Ivanhoe waste skews heavy, because a Federation or inter-war home gives up brick, render, hardwood and ceramic rather than light flat-pack offcuts. Dense rubble is capped by weight no matter how much room is left in the bin, so for a demolition-heavy job we will often steer you to a slightly smaller bin you can fill to the legal weight, rather than a big one a truck cannot lift once it is loaded. Tell us roughly what is coming out, room by room, and we will name the size that fits it.
About Binswest
Binswest is a family-run business, started by founder Mark in 2010 and operated out of our own yard in Sunshine North ever since. The same people who take your booking are the ones who know the north-east run, which is why the placement and permit questions get answered up front rather than discovered on delivery day.
Over 6,000 clients have hired skips from us across Melbourne, and around one booking in four now comes from a past customer pointing a neighbour our way rather than from any advert. The other number we stand behind is where the waste ends up. Everything runs through our Government-Approved Waste Transfer Station, and our 2024 recovery came in at 41% recycling, 35% repurposing and 24% to landfill, which keeps about three-quarters of a load, including the recoverable timber, brick and tile a heritage reno is full of, out of the ground.
Skip Prices for Ivanhoe, Listed in Plain Numbers
Most operators make you call for a number. Here they are instead. These are starting prices for a standard general-waste load in our Ivanhoe delivery zone, with the route from our yard already built into the figure:
-
from $250
-
from $350
-
from $450
-
from $550
-
from $650
-
priced on quote
A heavy rubble load, a longer hire or a permit-required street placement can move the final figure, which is why we confirm it against your actual job before the truck leaves. There is no teaser rate, and no surprise distance fee waiting at the gate. The number we quote on the phone is the number on the invoice, backed by a best-price guarantee with no hidden fees.
Where the Skip Stands, and the City of Banyule Permit That Follows
Placement is the question that decides the rest. If your home has a driveway, a hardstand or a side return with room, the bin sits on your own property and the council does not come into it at all. If it has to go on the road, the nature strip or the footpath, the City of Banyule requires a placement permit for it.
That kerbside case turns up more often in Ivanhoe than in the leafier garden blocks nearby, because the period streets sit on tighter, older frontages and the Upper Heidelberg Road shops have no front yard to fall back on. We work the answer out against your specific address when you book, not from the suburb name, and we will confirm the council’s current permit fee with you at the time rather than print a figure that may have shifted. One more thing worth raising early: a heritage overlay sits across many of the older streets here. It does not change where a skip is allowed to stand, but it can affect the work that fills it, since facade changes or external paint stripping on a covered home may need their own planning approval. Lodging that approval is between you and the council, not something we handle, though we will flag at booking when the waste you describe sounds like it is coming off overlay work.

Same-Day and Next-Day Delivery Across the Ridge
Ivanhoe sits on our established daily north-east rotation, so a delivery here is routine rather than a special trip out. Book and confirm before 9am and the bin generally goes out the same day, depending on how full the run already is. After that cut-off, next day is the norm. We operate Monday to Friday 7am to 4pm and Saturday 7am to 1pm, with after-hours support through the week and online enquiries picked up on Sundays.
Standard hire runs 3 to 7 days with extensions if you need them, and most domestic jobs out here are filled and ready for collection inside 3 to 5. Two things can stretch the timing worth planning for: a larger hooklift bin for a shopfront or demolition load needs a day’s notice to slot into the truck rotation, and a permit-required street placement waits on the council’s tick. Every confirmation carries the delivery and pickup dates in writing, and the hire is fully insured.
What the Bin Takes from a Heritage Reno, and What It Can’t
Most of what a period-home job produces goes straight in: old timber, plaster, cabinetry, flooring, tiles, brick, garden green waste, cardboard and general household rubbish. Heavy materials like brick, concrete, soil and rubble are welcome too, they simply belong in a weight-rated bin, so it helps to mention them when you book.
Older Ivanhoe housing brings two materials worth raising before the bin lands. Lead-based paint scrapings off pre-1970s weatherboards and window frames cannot go in general waste and need separate handling, so tell us and we will sort the right path for it. Asbestos, common in the eaves, fences and meter boxes of pre-1990 homes, is never allowed in any skip from any operator and legally calls for a licensed removalist. Also never in any bin: flammable liquids, wet paint, gas bottles, tyres and batteries. Our loads pass through a Government-Approved Waste Transfer Station under OH&S load-safety rules, so bins must not be filled above the rated line. The full list of what is allowed lives on our guide to what goes in our skip bins.
The Banyule Suburbs Next to Ivanhoe
Ivanhoe sits in a tight run of City of Banyule suburbs we cover on the same rotation, the same trucks and the same pricing. If your job is a street or two over, the neighbouring page may be the one you want:
- Bin Hire Ivanhoe East, the quieter, larger garden blocks dropping toward the Yarra, where the skip almost always fits on the driveway
- Bin Hire Eaglemont, the leafy hill pocket of period homes and established gardens above Heidelberg
- Bin Hire Heidelberg, the original riverside township and the Burgundy Street shops
- Bin Hire Bellfield, the compact pocket of post-war homes between Ivanhoe and the Darebin parklands
- Bin Hire Bundoora, the larger blocks further up the line where a skip usually sits well clear of the road
For the wider picture across every council area we cover, our metro-wide bin hire in Melbourne is the place to start.
What a Shopfront Fit-Out Quote Asks That a Reno Doesn’t
Not every Ivanhoe booking is a house. The Upper Heidelberg Road strip turns over too, and a shopfront stripped back for the next tenant is a different animal from a renovation two streets behind it, even though the same crew quotes both. A retail fit-out is paced to a lease handover, has no driveway to fall back on so the kerb and a City of Banyule permit are almost always in play, and produces a fast volume of shop-fittings, partitions, carpet and ceiling material that usually wants a larger walk-in or a hooklift bin sized at quote. A home reno is paced to the trades, often has a side return the bin can use, and gives up the heavier, denser rubble described above. Sixteen years on this run is what lets the person booking your delivery tell which one you have got, and quote it accurately the first time, instead of sending the wrong bin and sorting it out later.
Bin Hire Ivanhoe: Common Questions
A 2m3 mini starts from $250. A typical single-room Ivanhoe renovation lands on a 4m3 from $450, and a whole-room job on a 6m3 from $550. The largest fixed-price size is the 8m3 from $650; 10m3 and up are sized and priced on quote. Heavy rubble, a longer hire or a permit-required street placement can lift the final figure, so call for a flat quote on your actual job.
Only if the bin goes on the road, the nature strip or the footpath, which is common on Ivanhoe’s narrow heritage streets and for the Upper Heidelberg Road shops. If it fits on your driveway or hardstand, no permit is needed, and the City of Banyule is the council that issues one when it is. We will tell you which applies to your address before you commit.
Usually, yes, and it is worth describing the driveway when you book. A steep fall behind the house or low branches over the entry can decide between a walk-in skip placed on the drive and a different approach, so we would rather know first than find out on the day.
Most of it, yes: timber, plaster, fittings, flooring, brick and tile all load together. The exceptions are lead-paint scrapings off older homes, which need separate handling, and asbestos, which is never allowed in any skip. Heavy rubble is fine, it just belongs in a weight-rated bin.
