You have a flat to empty between tenancies, a unit being refurbished, or a whole block of apartments due for a body-corporate clean-out, and there is nowhere obvious to put the rubbish. That is the everyday job people hire a bin for in Travancore, and Binswest has been sorting it across this corner of Moonee Valley since 2010. Most streets here are lined with walk-up flats and unit blocks on tight frontages, so the first thing we settle is rarely the size. It is where the skip can actually stand. Tell us the address and roughly what is coming out, and we will work out the placement, the right bin and a price in writing before you book.
That density is what makes Travancore different from the larger-block suburbs around it. A house with a driveway can keep a skip on private ground. A unit on a shared frontage usually cannot, so the bin lands on the kerb or the nature strip, and a Moonee Valley permit comes into it. We read that first and quote the whole thing together, rather than leaving you to discover the permit after the bin arrives. Skip bin hire and mini skip hire both start the same way here: the access question, then the load.
Which Skip Size Suits a Unit or Apartment Clear-Out
Travancore work leans small. A single-room declutter, an end-of-lease strip of a one or two-bedroom flat, or a kitchen replaced in a unit rarely needs a builder’s bin. On a tight frontage a smaller skip is also easier to place legally. Our range runs from 2m3 through to 31m3 across Marrel, hooklift and skip bin types, so there is room to scale up when a body corporate clears a whole block at once.
As a rough guide for the jobs we see most around here:
- 2m3: a single room cleared, or a small end-of-lease tidy. The smallest footprint to place on a narrow frontage.
- 3m3: a flat’s worth of furniture and general household waste.
- 4m3: a unit refurbishment with old cabinetry, carpet and fittings coming out.
- 6m3: a larger refurbishment, or two or three units turned over together.
- 8m3: a body-corporate clear-out across several flats, or a bigger mixed load.
- 10m3 and larger: priced on quote, suited to a full-block strip-out or a redevelopment.
If you are not sure which way to size it, describe the job on the phone. Undersizing means a second bin; oversizing means paying for air. We would rather get it right the first time.
About Binswest
Binswest is a locally owned business run by Mark, operating out of our own Government-Approved Waste Transfer Station in Sunshine North since 2010. More than 6,000 clients have hired with us across Melbourne’s west, north, the CBD and the inner suburbs in that time. What sets the back end apart matters for an apartment clear-out in particular: when a body corporate or a tenant fills a bin with mixed household waste, it does not simply go to landfill. Every load comes back to the Sunshine North yard and is sorted by hand. In 2024 that recovered 41% of what we collected for recycling and a further 35% for repurposing, leaving 24% to landfill. For a block clearing years of accumulated odds and ends, that is a lot of material kept out of the tip.
Pricing for Bin Hire in Travancore
We publish starting prices rather than hiding them behind a form, because the question every Travancore caller asks first is what it costs. Each price is a from-rate; the final figure depends on the bin size, the hire length and the type of waste:
-
from $250
-
from $350
-
from $450
-
from $550
-
from $650
-
priced on quote
There are no hidden fees, and our best-price guarantee stands behind the figure we give you. The one cost we cannot fix in advance is the Moonee Valley placement permit, covered next, since that is the council’s charge and not ours.
When Can the Bin Be There?
We run a daily round out of Sunshine North, and Travancore sits an easy reach away on that route. Call before 9am and the bin can often go out on the same day, subject to how busy the run already is. Otherwise, next-day delivery is the norm. Our office hours are Monday to Friday 7am to 4pm and Saturday 7am to 1pm, and online enquiries are welcome any day, Sundays included. The standard pattern is a Monday drop and a Thursday pickup, with the hire usually running three to seven days and extensions available if a refurbishment runs long.

Getting a Bin Into the Pocket
Travancore is a small wedge boxed in by the Tullamarine Freeway, the Moonee Ponds Creek and the rail line, so the approach to a street matters more than it does in an open grid. Our drivers know the way in and how to position a truck where the side streets are narrow and parking is tight. When you give us the address, we picture the actual frontage: whether there is room to set the bin back off the road, or whether it has to take a kerbside spot. That is also why placement leads the conversation here. On a block with shared or on-street parking only, getting the skip down without blocking residents is part of the job, not an afterthought.
- Green Waste

- General Rubbish
Household items, old furniture, junk
- Building Materials
Bricks, tiles, concrete, plaster
- Commercial Waste

- Industrial Waste

What You Can and Can’t Put in the Bin
General household waste, furniture, renovation rubble, timber, garden waste and most commercial waste from a unit fit-out are all fine. By regulation, some things stay out of every skip: asbestos, gas bottles, tyres, batteries, flammable liquids and wet paint. Keeping prohibited items out protects the load so it can be sorted and recovered rather than rejected at the transfer station. If you have a specific item you are unsure about, ask when you book and we will confirm how to handle it.
- Wet Paints
Liquid paints or leftover tins
- Flammable Liquid
Petrol, thinners, solvents, oils
- Asbestos
Any bonded or loose asbestos
- Gas Bottles
BBQ cylinders, LPG tanks
- Tyres. Batteries*
Car tires, lithium's or lead-acid batteries

Clearing a Flat at the End of a Lease
Travancore turns over a lot of tenancies, so a bin booked to empty a flat before handover is one of the calls we take most. The timing is usually the tight part. The keys are due back, the final inspection is booked, and a tenancy’s worth of furniture, white goods and odds and ends has to be gone by a set date. A 2m3 or 3m3 skip handles most one or two-bedroom flats, and because the clock is the pressure point, a call before 9am can often put the bin out the same day. If you are a landlord or agent resetting a unit between tenants, the same booking works just as well, and we can time the drop and pickup around the inspection rather than around our run.
The Permit Question When You’re in a Flat
In Travancore the permit question comes up more often than in the surrounding driveway suburbs, simply because so many homes here are flats without off-street room. If the skip can sit entirely on your own property, no permit is needed. If it has to stand on the kerb, the nature strip or the road, which is the common case outside a unit block, the City of Moonee Valley requires a placement permit. We will tell you which applies to your address when we quote, and confirm the council’s current permit rate at booking rather than leaving you to chase it. You handle the job; we handle the paperwork conversation.
Booking One Bin for a Whole Block
Body corporates and building managers make up a real share of our Travancore work, and a shared clean-out is worth coordinating properly. One bin can serve an entire block: a committee organises the date, residents clear their storage cages, garages and balconies into it over the hire period, and the whole lot leaves in a single collection. If a refurbishment or a tenancy turnover means several units come apart at once, size up to a 6m3 or 8m3 and run it as one booking rather than several small ones. Tell us how many units are involved and what is coming out, and we will recommend the size and the placement that keeps one bin doing the work of many.
The Streets We Run Around the Racecourse
Travancore sits among the suburbs that ring Flemington Racecourse, and we run the same daily service to its neighbours. We cover bin hire in Ascot Vale, where the denser period homes near the Maribyrnong throw up their own access questions, and bin hire in Aberfeldie just across the river. We also run to bin hire in Flemington next to the racecourse, bin hire in Airport West out toward the freeway, and bin hire in Niddrie a little further out. All three sit in the City of Moonee Valley, so the permit rules read the same way they do here. When the spring carnival fills the streets around the racecourse and a short-term rental needs clearing between race meets, our event bin hire service handles that pressure too.
Travancore Bin Hire Questions, Answered
If the skip stands on the kerb, the nature strip or the road, which is usual for a flat without a driveway, the City of Moonee Valley requires a placement permit. If it fits on your own property, you do not. We confirm which applies to your address and sort the permit rate when you book.
Yes. A 2m3 or 3m3 mini skip is the most common choice on Travancore’s tighter frontages for exactly this reason. Tell us the parking situation and we will position the bin to suit it.
Most single-unit refurbishments land on a 4m3 once old cabinetry, flooring and fittings come out. A simple end-of-lease clear-out often fits a 2m3 or 3m3. Describe the job and we will size it before delivery.
Yes, and it is usually the cheaper way to do it. One 6m3 or 8m3 skip can take a whole block’s clean-out over the hire period, organised through the committee or building manager as a single booking.
Call before 9am and we can often deliver the same day, depending on the run. Otherwise next-day delivery is standard, six days a week.
